Rebuilding after years of setbacks

Theresa is an executive assistant and business team coordinator at a Melbourne legal firm. She has survived financial abuse, bankruptcy, breast cancer and job loss. Now earning more than $110,000, she is proud of how far she has come and equally candid about the habits she is still working on.

Before consolidating, Theresa had a Jacaranda loan, a credit card and Afterpay commitments. At times, the Afterpay balance reached its $4,000 limit, with up to $1,000 due in a fortnight. Keeping track of several dates and amounts added to the pressure.

One repayment and a little breathing room

Theresa compared options through WeMoney and applied with Latitude. She recalls the money arriving within 48 hours. The new repayment was about $260 a fortnight and replaced several separate commitments.

The change allowed her to direct roughly $300 to $400 a fortnight towards a planned holiday.

“It has made me feel a little bit more relaxed about my money,” she says.

Honest about what comes next

Theresa has used Afterpay again since consolidating. She plans to reduce or close it after the holiday and be stricter about new purchases.

That makes this a story of progress, not perfection. Consolidation simplified the old debts, but Theresa knows that lasting change also depends on what happens afterwards.

Her message to someone facing their own financial setback is grounded in lived experience: “You will get through it, and you will feel so much relief.”

The new repayment has not erased Theresa’s past. It has given her a clearer structure as she keeps rebuilding on her own terms.
