AGL: Award-Winning Energy With Everyday Value That Goes Further

At WeMoney, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on providers that go beyond the basics - not just through competitive products, but through a commitment to their customers. This year, AGL stood out in energy, taking home the top honour:

🏆 Retail Energy Provider of the Year - 2026 WeMoney Energy Awards

AGL was ranked the top-performing electricity and gas provider, delivering a strong all-round result across affordability and fees, accessibility and benefits, service quality and customer experience. Providers were also assessed on nationwide coverage, commitment to renewable energy and flexible product options, with the top award going to the provider that earned the highest weighted rating across these categories.

AGL didn’t stop there. They also won Best Solar Plan, Best for Flexibility (Electricity & Gas), Best for Value (Electricity) - NSW, and Best for Value (Electricity) - QLD.

A Trusted Australian Brand Since 1837

Established in 1837, AGL has been helping power Australian homes and businesses for nearly two centuries - making it one of the country’s oldest and most recognised energy brands. Today it serves millions of customers across electricity, gas, internet and mobile.

That longevity is part of why the Retail Energy Provider of the Year award resonates. AGL is proudly Australian, providing Australian-made electricity and gas, and it has built its reputation on customer service and innovation - continuing to invest in the technology and products customers use every day, rather than resting on its history.

Why AGL Stood Out

Each year, WeMoney assesses energy providers across affordability and fees, accessibility and benefits, service quality and customer experience. If you’re comparing electricity and gas providers, here are the key reasons AGL stood out:

More value from services you already use

  • AGL goes beyond energy by bundling services including internet, mobile and entertainment (the AGL Netflix Electricity Plan), helping households get more value from expenses they’re already paying for each month.
  • Energy customers can also access discounts on fuel through AGL’s partnership with bp fuel and out-of-home EV charging - one provider across multiple everyday services, for greater convenience and value.

Tools to help you manage usage and costs

  • AGL provides a leading app and a range of tools designed to help customers understand their energy use and stay on top of costs - rather than waiting for a bill to see where they stand.

Support for making the switch to electric

  • AGL’s Electrify NowTM platform helps customers see how products like solar, batteries, EVs and heat-pump hot water systems could benefit their home. Customers can estimate potential savings, understand available rebates, and connect with trusted installers - all in one place.

Flexible, award-winning plans

  • AGL’s wins for Best Solar Plan, Best for Flexibility (Electricity & Gas) and Best for Value (Electricity) in both NSW and QLD reflect a range of product options designed to suit different households and how they use energy.

Backed by wide coverage and a renewable focus

  • AGL was also assessed on breadth of coverage and its commitment to renewable energy - factors that matter more and more as Australians think about where their energy comes from.

What to Look For When Choosing an Energy Provider

Of course, choosing the right energy plan means knowing what to compare in the first place. Whether you’re switching for the first time or reviewing your current plan, these are the key things worth checking before you sign up:

  • Usage and supply charges - A plan has two main costs: what you pay per unit of energy you use (usage charges) and a fixed daily supply charge you pay regardless of how much you use. A low usage rate can be offset by a high daily charge, so it’s worth looking at both together.
  • Regulated reference prices - Retailers must show how their plan compares to  the comparison price set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), or the Victorian Default Offer in Victoria. This is the simplest way to compare plans on a like-for-like basis.
  • Solar & battery value - – If you have or plan to install solar or a battery consider how to maximise the value of your assets from feed-in tariffs, battery incentives and virtual power plant participation.
  • Conditional discounts and benefits - Some plans advertise discounts, subject to regulations, that only apply if you meet certain conditions, such as paying on time or by direct debit. Check what the rate looks like if you miss a condition.
  • Benefit periods and exit fees - Check whether the plan has a fixed benefit period, what happens to your rates when it ends, and whether any exit or account fees apply.
  • Billing and payment flexibility - Look for options that suit how you like to manage bills - such as bill smoothing to spread costs evenly, flexible due dates, and app-based tracking.
  • Green energy options - If reducing your footprint matters to you, check whether the retailer offers accredited GreenPower and what it costs.
  • Bundled services - If you’re combining energy with internet, mobile or other services, weigh up the combined value rather than each product on its own - and make sure each part still stacks up.
  • Support and digital tools - Good customer service and easy-to-use apps make a real difference day to day, especially when you need to check usage, update details or get help with a bill.

Congratulations, AGL

WeMoney is committed to helping Australians make smarter decisions about their money - and that extends to the everyday costs that shape a household budget, including energy. AGL’s wins at the 2026 WeMoney Energy Awards reflect a brand that has spent nearly two centuries powering Australian homes and is still finding new ways to add value. Congratulations to the AGL team - it’s well deserved.
