The gold WeMoney Awards Program winner badge

How to find the award that fits your next money decision

In short

Start from the decision in front of you, not the brand. A Gold badge goes to the brand with the highest weighted average in one specific category and results round, and a Silver badge marks the finalist. Only providers that enter are assessed, so treat a winner as a shortlist and check the product's current terms yourself.

The WeMoney Financial Services Awards cover bank accounts, loans, credit cards, insurance, super, investing, energy, broadband, travel and business products. The useful way in is to start from the decision in front of you, then treat the relevant award as one input into a wider comparison.

An awards page can look like a wall of brands and badges, and most people don't arrive with a category in mind. They arrive because a bill went up, a loan stopped feeling competitive, or a repayment schedule got hard to keep track of. So, start with what you're trying to sort out.

Start with the decision you need to make

Several repayments you're trying to get under control

Start with the Personal & Car Loan results, and the Credit Card results if cards are part of the picture. An award can point you at recognised providers, however your first job is understanding what you already owe: each balance, rate, fee, repayment and remaining term.

If a debt consolidation loan is on your mind, compare the new loan against your existing debts in total, not by its monthly repayment. A longer term can make the repayment look smaller while increasing what you pay overall. How to compare debt consolidation loans walks through the four numbers that matter.

If you're behind on repayments or struggling with essentials, more credit is usually the wrong next step. Your lender's hardship team has to consider a hardship request, and the National Debt Helpline is free, independent and confidential on 1800 007 007.

A personal loan or car loan

Go to the Personal & Car Loan results and find the category closest to how you plan to use the loan. Look past the headline rate: the comparison rate, fees, term, early-repayment rules and the rate you're actually offered all change the total cost.

An award can narrow the field, however it can't tell you what you can comfortably repay. Work that out before you apply. WeMoney matches members with lenders on its panel, and whether you qualify, and at what rate, depends on the lender's own assessment of your circumstances. Applying is not an approval.

Buying or refinancing a home

The Home Loan results are the place to start. Match the award category to your situation, an owner-occupier or investor loan for instance, rather than treating every home-loan badge as interchangeable.

Compare the current rate, the comparison rate, fees, features and the likely cost of switching. If you're refinancing, work out whether the saving over the time you expect to keep the loan outweighs the cost of moving.

A better bank account, savings option or credit card

Use the Everyday Banking results for transaction and savings accounts, and the Credit Card results when the decision involves borrowing on a card.

The detail matters here. For savings, check what you have to do to earn the bonus rate and what happens in a month you don't. For transaction accounts, look at fees, access and the features you'd genuinely use. For credit cards, compare the rate, annual fee, interest-free period, rewards and any balance-transfer terms. If you already carry a balance, rewards are probably the least important part of the comparison, so start with what the debt is costing you.

Insurance

The WeMoney Awards are general information only. They aren't financial, credit or product advice, and they aren't a recommendation to acquire any particular product.

Go to the Insurance results and pick the cover you actually need: car, home and contents, health, pet, travel or life. A recognised car insurer isn't automatically the right place to look for anything else.

Read the current Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination, and compare exclusions, limits, excesses, waiting periods and how the policy would respond to the risks that matter to you. Price matters, however a cheaper policy can still be poor value if it doesn't cover what you expect it to.

An energy or internet bill

Start with the Energy results or the Telco & Broadband results. An award can surface recognised providers, however the best plan for you depends on where you live, how much you use and what's available at your address.

For energy, compare the estimated annual cost for a household like yours rather than one discount percentage. For broadband, check the speed tier, typical evening speed, set-up costs, contract terms and what happens when an introductory price ends.

Super, investing or crypto

The WeMoney Awards are general information only, not financial product advice, and not a recommendation to acquire any particular product. WeMoney doesn't hold an Australian Financial Services Licence.

The Superannuation, Investment and Cryptocurrency results can help you build a shortlist. They don't replace reading the product itself.

For super, compare fees, long-term performance across several periods, investment options, insurance and the services you'd use. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns.

For investing or crypto, check fees, available assets, custody arrangements, risks, and how the product fits your experience and goals. Cryptocurrency is a volatile and largely unregulated asset class: you can lose some or all of what you put in, and an award recognises a platform, not the assets traded on it. If you don't understand how something works or what you could lose, pause before acting.

Travel, or services for a business

For travel, use the Travel results, and check the exact product recognised. If travel insurance is part of it, read the current policy wording for medical cover, cancellations, valuables, exclusions and anything specific to your destination or activities.

For a business, use the Business results and match the award to the job you need done: a business account and a business loan solve different problems even when the same brand appears in both. Consider professional advice where the decision affects tax, legal obligations or financing.

How to read a WeMoney award

A Gold badge goes to the brand that had the highest weighted average for a specific category, and a Silver badge marks the finalist, the brand with the second-highest weighted average in that category. Both belong to a category and a results round, not to everything a brand sells.

Before leaning on an award, check four things:

  • The year. Products, prices and terms change, so use the latest results.
  • The exact category. "Excellent Rates & Fees" and "Outstanding Customer Service" describe different strengths, and not every vertical runs both.
  • The assessed field. Only providers that enter the awards are assessed, and the awards don't cover every product in the market.
  • The product today. Confirm the current rate, fees, eligibility and documents with the provider.

If a brand has won several awards, read each badge separately. Multiple wins can show breadth, however they still don't make every product suitable for every person.

How the awards are funded, and what that does and doesn't affect

The Financial Services Awards are run by WeMoney Pty Ltd (ABN 88 633 007 860, Australian Credit Licence 526330). Only providers that enter are assessed, and providers may pay an entry or assessment fee to be assessed, which WeMoney waives at its discretion in some cases. That fee covers participation only: paying it, or holding a commercial relationship with WeMoney, confers no advantage in the assessment.

Separately, WeMoney may earn a fee when you click through to a provider, are matched with one, or take up a product, and some award-winning brands are also WeMoney commercial partners. That doesn't affect award results.

Does an award mean the product is right for you?

No. It gives you a shortlist and a place to start.

Your comparison still has to reflect what you need, what you qualify for and what the product costs now. That matters most with credit, insurance and investments, where small differences in terms or eligibility have large effects. Open the winner's current product page, read the documents that apply, and compare a few relevant options. If the decision is significant or complex, consider getting appropriately qualified advice.

Where debt consolidation fits

Debt consolidation belongs here because some readers arrive through the loan, credit card or banking results while trying to get several repayments under control. It isn't a next step for someone choosing super, insurance, energy, broadband or an investment platform.

Consolidation usually means replacing several debts with one new loan and one repayment. That can make the debts easier to manage. It can also cost more if the new rate, the fees or a longer term leave you paying more overall.

Before considering a new loan, compare:

  • Your existing balances, rates, fees and remaining terms.
  • The new rate and the comparison rate.
  • Upfront, ongoing and early-repayment fees.
  • The new repayment, and the total amount repayable.
  • Whether the loan is secured against your home or another asset.
  • What happens if your circumstances change.

How to compare debt consolidation loans covers the maths, and what to look for in a reputable lender covers who you're dealing with.
